Homemade vegan bacon bits ready to serve in a bowl

These Vegan Bacon Bits are smoky, savory, crispy, and seriously addictive. They're made with simple ingredients like TVP, soy sauce, maple syrup, and smoked paprika, and come together in just 20 minutes. I love sprinkling them over salads, soups, baked potatoes, pasta, or tofu scramble when I want an easy bacon-style topping without using store-bought bacon bits.

The TVP absorbs all the smoky, savory seasoning as it cooks, giving them a crispy texture and a rich bacon-style flavor without much effort. I also added a little maple syrup for sweetness and olive oil to help them get extra golden and crunchy.

They're also great for meal prep because they store really well in the fridge for several days. They make an easy smoky topping to have ready for salads, soups, potatoes, pasta, and other quick meals throughout the week.

If you're looking for more vegan bacon recipes, there are plenty of delicious options to try. My Tofu Bacon is crispy and smoky, Tempeh Bacon has a hearty texture and savory flavor, and Vegan Bacon is another easy homemade alternative that works great for breakfast, sandwiches, and more.

Why You'll Love These Vegan Bacon Bits

A few reasons I love this recipe:

  • Crispy, smoky, and savory: These vegan bacon bits have the perfect balance of smoky flavor, sweetness, and crunch thanks to the TVP, smoked paprika, maple syrup, and liquid smoke.
  • Quick and easy to make: You only need a few simple ingredients and about 20 minutes to make a batch from scratch.
  • Great for meal prep: They store really well in the fridge, making them perfect to keep on hand for quick meals throughout the week.
  • Budget-friendly and high in protein: TVP is affordable, easy to find, and packed with plant-based protein, so this recipe is both inexpensive and satisfying.
  • Perfect for adding flavor to simple meals: Sprinkle them over salads, soups, baked potatoes, pasta, sandwiches, or tofu scramble whenever you want an easy smoky topping.
Ingredients for vegan bacon bits

Vegan Bacon Bits Ingredients

  • TVP (textured vegetable protein): This is the base of the recipe and gives the bacon bits their crispy, meaty texture. I used small TVP crumbles, but other similar sizes should also work.
  • Soy sauce: Adds salty, savory flavor. Tamari is a great gluten-free option, and you can use low-sodium soy sauce if preferred.
  • Maple syrup: Adds a touch of sweetness and helps balance the smoky flavors. Agave syrup should also work.
  • Olive oil: Helps the vegan bacon bits get more golden and crispy in the oven while adding extra flavor. You can also use avocado oil, or another neutral oil. For an oil-free version, simply omit it.
  • Liquid smoke: Gives these vegan bacon bits their classic smoky bacon-style flavor. Hickory or mesquite liquid smoke both work well.
  • Smoked paprika: Adds smoky flavor and gives the vegan bacon bits their rich color. You can use sweet smoked paprika or hot smoked paprika depending on your preference.
  • Garlic powder: Adds more savory flavor and helps season the TVP evenly.
  • Black pepper: Freshly ground black pepper works best and adds a subtle spicy flavor.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Use small TVP crumbles: Smaller pieces work best for this recipe because they absorb the seasoning more evenly and get crispier in the oven.
  • Let the TVP absorb the liquid fully: After adding the TVP to the saucepan, stir well so it can soak up all the smoky seasoning before baking.
  • Stir every 5 minutes while baking: This helps the bacon bits cook more evenly and prevents the edges from burning too quickly.
  • Watch them closely toward the end: The vegan bacon bits can go from perfectly crispy to burnt pretty quickly during the last few minutes of baking.
  • Let them cool before serving: They may still feel slightly soft when they come out of the oven, but they will crisp up more as they cool.

Serving Suggestions

These vegan bacon bits are an easy way to add smoky, savory flavor and crunch to all kinds of dishes. Here are some of my favorite ways to use them:

  • Sprinkle them over salads like Vegan Caesar Salad or Vegan Macaroni Salad.
  • Add them to Roasted Potatoes or Smashed Potatoes with Vegan Sour Cream and chives.
  • Use them as a topping for soups, especially Vegan Potato Soup or Vegan Potato and Corn Chowder.
  • Add them to pasta dishes like Vegan Mac and Cheese or Vegan Carbonara.
  • Serve them with Tofu Scramble, Breakfast Potatoes, or Avocado Toast.
  • Use them in sandwiches, wraps, or burgers for extra texture and flavor.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

  • Fridge: Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5-7 days. They will stay crispier once fully cooled before storing.
  • Freezer: You can also freeze them in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months.
  • Thaw: Transfer them to the fridge and let them thaw overnight before reheating.
  • Reheat: Reheat them in a skillet over medium heat or in the oven at 350ºF (180ºC) for a few minutes until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my vegan bacon bits not crispy?

They may need a few more minutes in the oven or a thinner layer on the baking sheet. They also crisp up more as they cool.

Why did my vegan bacon bits burn?

The vegan bacon bits can burn quickly during the last few minutes of baking, especially around the edges. Make sure to stir them every 5 minutes and keep a close eye on them toward the end.

Can I make these vegan bacon bits oil-free?

Yes, you can omit the olive oil if you prefer an oil-free version. The vegan bacon bits may be slightly less crispy, but they will still be delicious.

What type of TVP works best for this recipe?

Small TVP crumbles work best because they absorb the seasoning evenly and become crispier in the oven.

Can I make these vegan bacon bits without liquid smoke?

Yes, but the smoky flavor won't be as strong. You can add a little extra smoked paprika for more smoky flavor if needed.
