Making your own chili powder at home is so easy! It really is great to know how to prepare it in case you run out of it. And I'm telling you - once you start blending it yourself, you'll never want to buy it again.

This recipe is so simple and quick it does not have any complications. You just need to combine all the ingredients, mix them well, and that's it! And the best part is that you can customize it with any spice you have on hand.

I use it in plenty of different recipes, but I really enjoy the flavor it gives to my vegan chili. It turns out delicious! And, as it is homemade, you can be sure it does not contain any kind of additive or preservative.

Chili powder recipe, an extremely simple but useful recipe perfect to add to all your cozy savory dishes. It's made with 6 simple ingredients you most likely already have at home and it requires only 5 minutes!

How to make chili powder - Step by step

Step-by-step photos of how to make this recipe
    • Combine all the ingredients and mix well (photo 1).
    • Store your chili powder in a sealed container (photo 2).

    Pro tips

    • Feel free to add or omit any spices or herbs you don't like.
    • Some people also add salt to the mix.
    • Add more or less cayenne pepper depending on how spicy you like it.
    • I prefer to use regular or sweet paprika, as I think smoked paprika has a really strong flavor and hot paprika makes the mix too spicy for me, but that's up to you.
    • You could only add garlic powder (in that case double the amount), but I like to add onion powder as well.

    What is chili powder?

It is a blend of spices that are usually used in savory dishes like vegan chili. However, you can add it to plenty of different recipes, such as Buffalo cauliflower wings or even vegan Sloppy Joes.

    Is chili powder spicy?

Yes, it can be a little spicy, but as it not only contains hot spices (as it is also made with oregano and cumin), it is not super hot.

How long will this chili powder keep?

You can store it in a sealed container and keep it in a dark, cool place and it will last for up to 1 year.
