Ingredient notes
- Powdered sugar or confectioners’ sugar: although you can use it store-bought, I really suggest you make your own version at home following our recipe. It's easy, simple, and quick!
- Unsweetened plant milk: any type of unsweetened non-dairy milk is okay, but I always use soy milk for this recipe.
- Vanilla extract: I like to use homemade vanilla extract as it’s more affordable and extremely easy to make, but store-bought is also a good choice.
Dietary variations
- Make it soy-free: use any type of plant milk or replace it with fresh orange or lemon juice to get orange or lemon icing.
How to make vegan icing
- In a medium-size mixing bowl, whisk the powdered sugar, plant milk, and vanilla extract together until smooth.
- Use your vegan icing immediately.
How to store
- Fridge: best when fresh, keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
- Freezer: keep it in an airtight container in the freezer for 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then give it a quick mix.
Serving suggestions
This amount of icing is perfect for 1 batch of vegan cinnamon rolls, vegan scones, and even your favorite kind of cupcakes.
It also works wonderfully on Vegan Pumpkin Muffins. For a larger batch, this recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.

OMG! This was awesome!!! I followed ur recipe exactly n it was awesome!! As good as I hoped & def better than expected. I've wanted to make icing for stuff I bake but other icing recipes use milk/cream/ & butter-- I do almond milk. I used almond milk & vanilla extract in ur recipe n turned out great! Really nice surprise for my family, too!

This turned out nicely. I had lemon on hand so I switched out the vanilla. Tasted good. Good recipe.
