Ingredients and tips

  • Extra virgin olive oil: I'm Spanish, so I use extra virgin olive oil to cook most of my dishes. However, any type of oil is okay. I always use extra virgin oils when possible because they're healthier.
  • Garlic cloves.
  • Onion.
  • Store-bought or Homemade Chili Powder: this chili recipe calls for traditional American chili powder, not cayenne. Cayenne and international chili powders are usually incredibly spicy. So if you live outside of the United States, please keep that in mind. If you can only find cayenne, add it to taste until the chili is okay for you, but not too spicy. You could also use chipotle powder, but please add it slowly and try your chili before adding more.
  • Ground cumin.
  • Salt: I used ionized salt, but any salt will do.
  • Sweet potato: feel free to use any kind of sweet potato.
  • Black beans: you could also use other types of beans if you want, such as pinto beans.
  • Diced tomatoes.
  • Vegetable stock or water: I prefer to use vegetable stock because it enhances the flavor of this dish. However, water is okay too. I'd suggest you make your own vegetable broth, but feel free to use it store-bought if you want.
  • Serve it on its own or eat it with tortilla chips and vegan sour cream!
