Besides, this sauce only requires 8 common ingredients that you might already have in your pantry. If not, you'll easily find them at any supermarket. And it's ready in just 20 minutes!
How to make vegan Worcestershire sauce
- Add all the ingredients to a saucepan and whisk until well combined.
- Bring to a boil, and then simmer until the liquid is reduced by half.
- Strain the vegan Worcestershire sauce and let it cool before using.
Ingredients and tips
- Apple cider vinegar: to make this sauce you could use other types of vinegar, such as wine vinegar.
- Soy sauce or tamari: although I used soy sauce, tamari is a good gluten-free alternative. If you don't consume soy, coconut aminos is a great substitute. You could also add the same amount of water or vegetable stock and add more salt.
- Maple syrup: feel free to customize your vegan Worcestershire sauce with your favorite type of sweetener. Agave syrup is the best alternative though. However, granulated or brown sugar are also good choices.
- Garlic powder.
- Onion powder.
- Ground cinnamon.
- Ground black pepper: fresh ground black pepper tastes amazing. However, I find the store-bought one to be more convenient and easier to measure with a teaspoon.
- Ground ginger.
- Feel free to add this vegan Worcestershire sauce to recipes like vegan steak, vegan sausages, and cauliflower steak, or to any of your favorite dishes. Go ahead and get creative!
Is Worcestershire sauce vegan?
No, the original recipe is not vegan, as it usually contains fish sauce and anchovies. This vegan version is delicious though!
Is Worcestershire sauce gluten-free?
No, this sauce is not gluten-free, because it is made with soy sauce, which contains gluten. However, it is so easy to make it suitable for people who don't eat gluten! Just replace the soy sauce with tamari.
Does it need to be refrigerated?
Yes! It has to be refrigerated in order to keep the best quality for a longer period of time (up to 3 months). Just keep it in an airtight container in the fridge.

Would coconut nectar work as a substitute for the maple syrup?
