What is a house salad?
A house salad is essentially the kind of salad that any US restaurant serves on a daily basis. It is made with simple ingredients and served with a vinaigrette dressing.
Some of the most common ingredients are lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and croutons, among others.
Ingredient notes
- Romaine lettuce: feel free to make your own version of this house salad recipe using any type or lettuce or leafy green you have on hand.
- Croutons: use them store-bought or make your own recipe at home!
- Cherry tomatoes: any type of tomatoes is okay.
- Vegan shredded cheese: Although I used store-bought vegan cheese, if you can’t find it or prefer a homemade version, our vegan Parmesan cheese is exactly what you're looking for!
- Extra virgin olive oil: I’m Spanish, so I use extra virgin olive oil to cook most of my dishes. However, any type of oil is okay. I always use extra virgin oils when possible because they’re healthier.
- Apple cider vinegar: Feel free to replace the apple cider vinegar with white vinegar or lemon juice.
Dietary variations
- Make it gluten-free: use gluten-free croutons if needed. You could also make our easy chickpea croutons recipe.
- Make it oil-free: use any oil-free dressing you want, store-bought or homemade. I do suggest you try our easy Lemon Tahini Dressing, it’s delicious and ready in 5 minutes!
