Tofu Basics for Beginners

Cooking tofu is easier than it seems once you know which type to use and the best cooking method for each recipe.

Extra-firm tofu is the best option for crispy tofu, stir fries, bowls, and most savory recipes because it holds its shape well and gets golden and crispy when cooked. Firm tofu has a softer texture but still works well in many everyday recipes. Silken tofu is much creamier and is best for sauces, soups, smoothies, and desserts.

Pressing tofu helps remove excess moisture, which helps it get crispier and absorb more flavor. If you're new to it, check out my guide on How to Press Tofu. Freezing tofu is another easy trick that gives it a chewier, meatier texture that's great for saucy dishes and marinades. You can learn more in my How to Freeze Tofu guide.

Crispy Tofu Recipes

Getting tofu crispy is one of the best ways to make it more flavorful and satisfying. Over the years, I've found that simple techniques like pressing the tofu well, using high heat, and choosing the right cooking method make a huge difference in both texture and flavor.

These recipes include some of my favorite ways to cook crispy tofu, from baked and air fried tofu to breaded and pan-fried versions that are easy enough to make any day of the week.
