Ingredients

  • 4 apples peeled and finely chopped
  • 6 tablespoon sugar I used coconut sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Lemon juice 1 lemon, optional

Instructions

  • Place the apples, sugar, water, cinnamon stick, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Cook over high heat until the mixture starts to boil, then cook the applesauce over medium heat for 40 minutes or until you get a perfect consistency.
  • Remove the cinnamon stick.
  • You can blend the applesauce or use a masher or a fork, but this step is optional.
  • Serve it with some bread and eat it as a healthy snack, or use it as an egg substitute in baking. A regular egg would be ¼ cup of applesauce (1 tbsp). It works great with recipes like vegan brownies or vegan pancakes
  • Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To thaw, transfer it to the fridge 1 or 2 days before eating it.

Notes

  • You can use any kind of apples to make this recipe.
  • I used coconut sugar, but feel free to use any type of sweeteners like stevia or date syrup. You can omit it if you want to.
  • I suggest you add a little bit of sugar first, then try the applesauce and if you feel like it needs to be sweeter, add some more of it.
  • Lemon juice will help this recipe keep longer in good condition. You can omit it if you want your applesauce to be super sweet, though.
  • This recipe is perfect for using apples that have almost gone bad.
