I have a huge smoothie for breakfast almost every day, but I’ve never made a smoothie bowl before and I’m in love! This kind of smoothie is served in a bowl (instead of a jar or a glass) with fruits, nuts or seeds on top and is also thicker.
I don’t make or buy peanut butter very often because is really addictive and I can’t stop to eat until the jar is empty. I prefer homemade peanut butter because is healthier and tastes better, in addition, it’s expensive and hard to find here in Spain. Anyway, if you don’t like peanut butter, use another kind of nut butter or remove it.
This smoothie bowl is made with carob powder, but you can also use unsweetened cocoa powder instead. Carob powder is healthier because is caffeine free, but I think cocoa tastes better.
Feel free to use other sweetener instead of the dates, or other plant milk or even water or coconut water instead of the rice milk. Make your own homemade plant milk, they’re usually cheaper and taste amazing.
I used 4 bananas to make the smoothie, 2 of them were frozen. If your blender isn’t powerful, you can use only regular bananas or just blend the rest of the ingredients before adding the chopped frozen bananas.
There are so many toppings you can add like fresh fruit, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, chocolate or peanut butter. I added a sliced banana, shredded coconut, chopped chocolate (chocolate chips work also great), peanuts and sesame seeds.
In Spain, many kids have a big bowl of store bought breakfast cereals with cow milk every morning and this is not a healthy and nutritious breakfast. This smoothie bowl is a great alternative and the kids like it because they love chocolate and peanut butter. It’s also a perfect dessert, because is similar to a vegan chocolate custard.

This chocolate peanut butter smoothie bowl is perfect for breakfast or just like a dessert. The kids love it!
Ingredients
- ½ cup rice milk (125 ml)
- 4 bananas (2 of them were frozen)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- 8 tbsp carob powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 8 dates
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If your blender isn’t powerful, you can use only regular bananas or just blend the rest of the ingredients before adding the chopped frozen bananas.
- Add your favorite toppings. I added a sliced banana, shredded coconut, chopped dark chocolate, peanuts and sesame seeds.
Oh my! That was delicious!! I should have taken a picture it was so pretty (lol) I made three substitutions. I used 1% cows milk, almond butter instead of peanut butter (I’m highly allergic), and used 4TB of cocoa powder instead of 8 TB of carob powder/ Even after halving the chocolate it was still very chocolatey.
Since I work nights I made it yesterday evening and stirred in about 2 tsp of chia seeds and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight (which added to its thickness). Before eating this morning, I topped it with slivered almonds, grated coconut, blueberries, & bananas.
Very filling and I will definitely make this again. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Rose! You’re so welcome 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing although I found you don’t need that much cacao. I also added a small amount of LSA. Thanks for this go to breakfast recipe I use all the time!
★★★★★
Hi Robina! You’re so welcome 🙂
Good recipe, made a few tweaks though. Very sweet so I would halve the dates next time. I added a bit more soy milk and one gluten free weetbix for a breakfast. Also used half the amount of cocoa powder and was definitely chocolaty enough. This would make a great dessert (without the weetbix) and I’ll be trying it with frozen bananas next time as I didn’t have any this time. Thanks for the great recipe.
Hi Wren! Sounds amazing 🙂 You’re so welcome!
Delicious! I made it with 1 banana as 4 is too sweet for me.
Hi Emma! Thanks a lot 🙂 Have a nice day!
I really want a thicker version of this. What would you recommend to make it thicker?
Hi Calli! You could add more frozen bananas and less milk 🙂
Try adding some oats. It will make it thicker and add nutrients.
Hi Jen! Thanks a lot for your comment 🙂
Made this but added raw spinach. It turned it kind of a gross color, but you can’t taste the spinach at all! Just a helpful hint for anyone looking to get more greens in their diet.
Hi Katie! It’s a great idea 🙂 Thanks a lot for your comment!
I love bananas but cannot stand dates! Can I substitute them for anything else? (apples?)
Hi Aly! Use any other sweetener, maple syrup and coconut sugar are my favorite ones 🙂
Can you use PB2 in this? How would you substitute it for peanut butter, just add extra liquid?
★★★★★
Hi Gina! I’ve never tried PB2, so I can’t help you, sorry!
I am hoping to make this tonight to share with my kiddos. I don’t currently have dates at home. Can you give me an approximation for how much maple syrup or agave to substitute for the dates?
I look forward to diving into your other recipes as well!
Hi Michelle! I’m so sorry, but I don’t know the how much agave you should use, but just add it gently until the smoothie is sweet enough for you 😉 Hope you like it!
Omnomnom i just ate this for breakfast, and it was amazing! I used soy milk, and unfrozen bananas, and it was really tasty. I’m just venturing into vegan eating, following the “Vegan before 6” principle, and have been seeing lots of recipes with dates in it. I’m not a huge dried date fan and was worried that I wouldn’t like the taste, but you can’t even taste them here.
Thanks for the recipe!
Hi Cecile! You’re welcome 🙂 If you don’t like dates, you can use any other sweetener instead 🙂
Hi, any idea if this would work if I just used skimmedmilk?
Hi Aneesha! We are vegans so we don’t consume milk. You should try plant milks, they’re much healthier and also cruelty-free. Have a nice day!
Hi! What can I replace the dates with?
Hi Darim! Feel free to use any other sweetener instead 😉 I also love maple syrup and coconut sugar 😀
I thought about using honey, but how much would equal 8 dates?

Hi Heather! We’re vegans, so we don’t consume honey 🙂
This is the best! Thank you for sharing this recipe, it’s helped conquer my sweet tooth in a much healthier way 🙂
Hi Dulce! Thanks a lot 😀 Have a nice day!
Hi there – I stumbled onto this recipe and have to say I am intrigued! Chocolate and peanut butter are clearly the best duo in food history, but I have to ask – how much do you notice the banana flavor? I am one of those weird people that just cant stand the taste of bananas. Is there anything else I could swap it out for? Thanks so much!
Hi Tifanny! You can add more peanut butter and chocolate, or you can also use another fruit instead of the bananas, like pears or mango 🙂
My mom and I have been on a smoothie fix for a couple of months, we have to try this one. I love chocolate & peanut butter.
Hi Jordyn! I hope you like it 😉
Can I substitute coconut, soy, or almond milk??
Hi Missy! You can use your favorite plant milk 🙂

Hi Summer! I hope you like it!!!
Is this for one serving? 4 bananas is a lot for one person if it is!
Hi Amy! This is for 2 or 4 servings depending if you’re going to eat it as a breakfast or as a dessert, althoguh I eat a lot of fruit, so 4 bananas is not a lot for me 🙂
Could you please post the amount of calories you would consume by eating this? And in the recipies where the nutritional information is missing?
Hi Linda! I’m not sharing the nutritional information anymore, but you could use this amazing web https://www.caloriecount.com/ Have a nice day!
